The gallbladder is connected with cystic duct which helps it to transfer the bile juice. The bile duct is connects with intestine through bile ducts. Gallbladder cancer is a rare disease. It occurs when tissue of gallbladder becomes malignant. Gallbladder has 4 layers, namely:

  • Mucosal layer- Inner most
  • Muscle layer.
  • Connective tissue layer.
  • Serosal layer. – Outer most

Gallbladder cancer starts with the inner layer and spreads to the outer layer as it grows. Being a female the rate of getting Gallbladder cancer becomes high. Also, Native Americans have better chances of getting Gallbladder cancer. So they need to pay more attention to the symptoms of gallbladder cancer. This year, an estimated 11,980 adults (5,600 men and 6,380 women) in the United States will be diagnosed with gallbladder and other biliary cancers. Signs and Symptoms of Gallbladder cancer

  • Jaundice
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Bloating
  • Regular pain above the stomach
  • Lumps in the abdomen

Gallbladder cancer is difficult to detect

This type of rare cancer is difficult to detect because:

  • It may not show any signs and symptoms at the primary stage
  • Gallbladder cancer’s symptoms are very similar to many other diseases too.
  • Anatomically it is located behind the liver
  • Even if the gallbladder of a person is removed because of any reason, the cancer can still occur.

What are the risk factors of Gallbladder cancer?

A risk factor is anything that increases the chance of occurring. But one should keep in mind that risk factors certainly doesn’t mean that you may get cancer. It may cause another diseases. Following are the risk factors that may increase the rate of getting gallbladder cancer:

  • Gallstones
  • Gallbladder polyps- small stones embedded in the gallbladder wall
  • Age- people with more than 70 yrs have high chances of getting gallbladder cancer.
  • Gender- women are twice as high chances compared to men
  • Smoking
  • Family history- genetically
